American Crime Story Season 3 preview
Impeachment: American Crime Story is based on the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, by Jeffrey Toobin. News of its development was first announced in 2017 and was originally intended as the show’s fourth season.
The planned third season titled Katrina, based on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, was ultimately scrapped, paving the way for Impeachment to get the slot. Filming and production started at the end of last year.
Impeachment chronicles the revelation of Bill Clinton’s affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, leading to a national crisis that divided a nation and shocked the world. His denial of the nature of his relationship with Lewinsky led to perjury charges, which lead to the first impeachment of a U.S. President in over a century.
The civil servant who disclosed the affair, Linda Tripp, and the secret recordings of her conversations with Lewinsky, all became central to the impeachment trial of President Clinton.
In Impeachment, the ensuing events following the scandal are examined through the eyes of the women involved – Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp, and Paula Jones. Paula Jones is a civil servant who sued Clinton for sexual harassment.
It was during the Jones suit that Clinton denied having sexual relations with Lewinsky, which resulted in perjury charges after evidence of sexual contact was exposed. As Bill Clinton’s presidency hung in the balance, all three women attracted national attention during a period of corrosive partisan rancour, shifting sexual politics, and a developing media landscape.
