Claire Foy and Paul Bettany’s new historical drama series, A Very British Scandal, is now available to stream on demand. It chronicles the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, its eventual decline, and the tumultuous divorce case that followed. While the series dramatises factual events, it also aims to examine the scandal inside out so as to better understand the social and political climate of postwar Britain.
What’s in this Guide?
A Very British Scandal plot
The historical drama tells the story of Margaret Campbell and Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell. Married in the 1950s, their relationship took a drastic turn when a divorce case was filed, both accusing each other of infidelity. The events surrounding their notorious divorce unravel as accusations of theft, violence, drug use, secret recording, and an explicit polaroid picture paraded the public eye.
The three-part series also inspects the public attitude towards women as the duchess dominated the front pages, betrayed by her friends, and was publicly shamed for the many acts she was accused of doing and the dissolution of her marriage. Thus, it seizes the question of whether misogyny was already prevalent at the time.
A sequel to 2018’s A Very English Scandal, which depicted the Jeremy Thorpe scandal in the 1970s, this new stylish drama is written and created by Sarah Phelps. The TV series premiered on BBC One in December 2021, and thanks to Amazon Studios, it also had its international release on April 2022.
