“But even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room.” – Miep Gies
The remarkable real life story of Miep Gies, the woman who hid Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis during World War II, is the subject of the biographical drama, A Small Light. The series puts a spotlight on Anne Frank’s protectors, specifically Miep Gies and her quiet strength during one of the darkest times in history.

How to watch A Small Light in Australia
A Small Light tells the story of Anne Frank (Billie Boullet) through the eyes of Miep Gies (Bel Powley). Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) becomes her employer, ultimately forming a close relationship with the family. When the Germans begin marching in, she agrees to hide Otto Frank and his family, which she does instantly without hesitation despite the dangers that are sure to befall her.
For the next two years, she and her daring and devoted husband, Jan (Joe Cole), alongside several other everyday heroes, protected the Frank family, as well as the van Pels and Pfeffer families, who were all hiding in the secret annex above Otto Frank’s business premises. Gies, who lived to be 100, was also the one who found and preserved Anne Frank’s diary, which Otto Frank later published.
Disney Plus had greenlit the limited series from National Geographic last February 2022, with Tony Phelan, Joan Rater, and William Harper Ben Esler joining in as writers and Susanna Fogel directing multiple episodes of the show. A Small Light has since gained favourable reviews from critics and audiences alike.
