A House Made of Splinters documentary preview
The Lysychansk Centre is a facility in eastern Ukraine where troubled parents can drop off their children for up to nine months while they wrestle with their own demons. But often domestic violence, alcoholism, and addiction take more than nine months to withstand and resolve, leaving their kids behind.
While awaiting court custody decisions to determine their future, the children are cared for by a group of women running the facility. As they struggle with homesickness, trauma, fear, and the pain of having unreliable parents, staff do their best to make the time children have there bearing a semblance of normalcy and hope.
From the brilliantly unobtrusive approach of Danish film director Simon Lereng Wilmont, A House Made of Splinters uncovers heartbreak with its undeniable emotional power. Moreover, the filmmaker’s ability to capture truth and intimate sentiments without crossing the line makes this documentary feature worth watching.
