What is the plot of Ghosts Season 5?

One of the best British comedies right now, Ghosts (UK) follows a young married couple Alison and Mike Cooper, who learn that the former has inherited a large estate from a distant relative. While the house is not in good shape, the excited couple are thrilled at the idea of a massive house for themselves, but not until they discover that it’s actually haunted by multiple ghosts of different time periods.

Threatened by the house’s new owners, these eccentric ghosts, of course, have nothing better to do than spook their new housemates in their attempt to drive them away. Only they seem to have underestimated Alison and Mike’s need for a free house. And so everyone’s adventures, both living and dead, begin. But first, Mike tells Alison to tell the ghosts to stop watching him when he uses the toilet, so there’s that.

In Season 5, the ghosts prank Alison into thinking she can no longer see them. Then Alison surprises Mike with the news of her pregnancy, which makes the couple decide to sell off land. Meanwhile, Mike and Thomas attempt to comfort Obi when Brenda breaks up with him.

The ghosts have also decided to investigate Kitty’s puzzling death, leading them to suspect Kitty’s jealous sister Eleanor. Finally, when Alison overhears Julian’s admission of something shocking, she decides to sell Button House to a resort company. Will the ghosts join Alison and Mike in their decision to leave?

The ghosts are not always causing trouble as they’ve helped the couple on some occasions, like when the ghosts wake Mike to alert him of intruders. They also help Alison and Mike expose Lucy’s scam. Reciprocating to these rare gestures of kindness, Alison cheers Pat by showing him the compilation videos made by his son after his death.

As she’s also grown to care for them, Alison encourages Kitty to express herself in therapy. When the couple found it hard to dislodge Mike’s mother, Betty, from interfering too much, all the ghosts also step in to offer their best advice.

The cast of Ghosts UK comprise Charlotte Ritchie as Alison Cooper, Kiell Smith-Bynoe as Michael ‘Mike’ Cooper, Lolly Adefope as Katherine ‘Kitty’ Higham, Mathew Baynton as Thomas Thorne, Simon Farnaby as Julian Fawcett MP, Martha Howe-Douglas as Lady Stephanie ‘Fanny’ Button, Jim Howick as Patrick ‘Pat’ Butcher, Laurence Rickard as Rogh/’Robin’, Ben Willbond as ‘The Captain’, and Katy Wix as Mary Guppy, although she left the series after Ghosts Season 4.

Samantha Pearl also appeared as Mike’s sister Angela, while Geoff McGivern and Sophie Thompson play Mike and Alison’s wealthy neighbours Barclay and Bunny Beg-Chetwynde.
