Ashes 2019 TV Preview: Australia vs England
The Ashes and the urn associated with the Series is regarded as the greatest prize in world cricket despite it featuring just the two teams, Australia vs England. The term originated in a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, ‘The Sporting Times’, immediately after Australia won a Test at the Oval in 1882, its first Test win on English soil. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”. The mythical ashes immediately became associated with the 1882-83 Test Series in Australia, with England captain Ivo Bligh vowing to “regain those Ashes” and thus, history was created. There have been 70 Series of the Ashes with Australia winning 33, England winning 32 with 5 drawn series.
England is currently ranked the number one team in the world as they head into this Ashes Cricket Series the favourites, and it’s not hard to see why that is the case. They have, for the most part, dominated teams in 2019, starting with a tied ODI Series with the West Indies before comfortably beating the Windies in a T20 Series. They then faced Pakistan in an ODI Series and were dominant, winning 4-0. They did hit a rough patch in the Cricket World Cup group stage but it all came together during the Finals, culminating in their first-ever World Championship, with the victory made even sweeter as they delivered in front of their faithful at Lord’s in London by winning the Super Over in spectacular fashion. Eoin Morgan has been a great captain for the Poms and his excellent form with the bat during his brief stay in the Big Bash Cricket League translated to the English national side, and he’s certainly a barometer for how the team will go in this tournament.
Additionally, Australia and England are old rivals that got back nearly 150 years and are arguably the two in form sides heading into this edition of the Ashes. It will be very interesting to see what England’s fan base, the ‘Barmy Army’, will do to Australian players Steve Smith and David Warner, who are back playing for Australia after ‘Sandpaper Gate’. Both seemed to smile and laugh off barbs during the recent Cricket World Cup, but the Barmy Army is capable of taking it to another level, which should make for some very interesting TV ratings when the OzTAM report comes out.
