Boston Celtics NBA preview
The Boston Celtics may not have the strongest squad in their history, but that’s only because their dominant team of the ‘60s is unmatchable! The Celtics still boast some strong players, with the likes of Al Horford and Jayson Tatum in their ranks.
They go into the 2022/23 season off the back of a stellar previous season, as they were crowned Eastern Conference champions and reached the NBA Championship finals. However, they lost to the Golden State Warriors in what was a hard-fought battle. But the Celtics don’t back down easily, and they should bounce back with vigour this season!
Interestingly, the Celtics’ head coach Ime Udoka was suspended for an entire year at the start of the season for breaching the team’s code of conduct. He had an affair with a female Celtics staff member, which instantly led to his temporary dismissal. In his place, interim coach Joe Mazzulla will lead the Celtics for the 2022/23 season.
Notable Celtics players
There have been some outstanding players over the years for the Boston Celtics, like Bill Russell and Larry Bird, who have been instrumental in the continued success of the club. The Celtics currently have a strong roster of players, and we’ve picked out a few that we think you should keep on your radar for the 2022/23 season.
Al Horford
Horford has had two spells with the Celtics, the first coming between the years of 2016 and 2019. In 2021, Horford rejoined the side after two seasons away from Boston and helped lead the Celtics to an NBA finals appearance.
Al Horford is a five-time NBA All-Star and is currently the highest-paid Latin American basketball player in the world, which just goes to show how highly he is rated by everyone.
Jayson Tatum
Tatum is easily one of the best offensive players in the NBA, having been chosen three times for the NBA All-Stars and twice for the All-NBA selection. He was selected by the Celtics in 2017 as the third overall pick and has certainly lived up to the hype.
Last season, Tatum was voted MVP for the Eastern Conference finals, as Boston reached the NBA finals. He’ll be looking to spur his team on that little bit further this season as the Celtics push for an NBA Championship win.
Jaylen Brown
Despite some struggles during the earlier years of his Celtics career, Brown has grown from strength to strength over the past three seasons. He was selected for the 2021 All-Star team as a reserve, the first All-Star of his career. The following season, he was instrumental as the Celtics reached the NBA finals, narrowly losing out to the Golden State Warriors despite Brown’s prolific scoring record.
Boston Celtics championships
The Celtics are one of the most prolific teams in the history of the NBA. Alongside the Los Angeles Lakers, they hold the joint record for most NBA Championship finals wins with 17. However, the Celtics have only one NBA Championship to their name in the 21st century, appearing in just three finals since the turn of the millenia.
Their last Championship win came in 2008, and before that, it was 1986. The three decades spanning the ‘60s to the ‘80s were the most successful for the Celtics, winning 14 Championships over those 30 years. This included seven straight wins from 1960-1966, coupled with triumphs in 1968 and 1969, which rounded off an unprecedented and utterly dominant decade of basketball from the Celtics.
Watch the NBA finals live
The NBA finals series is the most anticipated sporting event in the basketball calendar. Fans from all over the world tune in to watch the best of the best face off against each other to first crown the conference champions and then to decide the overall NBA Championship.
The NBA Championship is a highly coveted, much-desired title for any NBA team, but it’s a difficult one to attain. Fortunately for the Celtics, though, they’ve got a good track record in the NBA finals, so they’ll be looking to extend their history of success come the postseason.
