Australia’s success in field hockey during the Olympic Games has often buoyed the domestic product. Across the four Olympic games between 1988 and 2000, the Australian Women’s national hockey team brought home three gold medals. This included several goals from Nikki Hudson who finished as the top scorer in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The men aren’t bad either, having won the 2004 Olympic tournament and then finishing as runners-up in the most recent games in Tokyo, Japan.
Hockey in Australia
When there are no Olympic tournaments, what do the field hockey players do? Do they even play field hockey in Australia?
Well, luckily there’s more than enough competition to keep them busy and on the field here in Australia. This includes the FIH Pro League which sees international teams compete against one another.
Hockey One is the apex of the domestic hockey competition with male and female teams like Brisbane Blaze, Canberra Chill, and the Perth Thundersticks. The grandeur of such can attract top players from around the world to play right here in Australia. Excitingly, this returns in 2022 after having an enforced break due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Key players in contemporary hockey
One of the most exciting players in the game right now is Ambrosia Malone. The 24-year-old from the Gold Coast was the player of the 2019 tournament final, as her team, Brisbane Blaze played Hockey Club Melbourne for the spoils. Before that, however, she’d already proven her worth with several medals across international and continental competitions, having scored 19 goals for Australia already.
In the men’s game, there are few more accomplished players than Blake Govers. The forward has a wealth of experience having played in both England and the Netherlands, despite only being 26 years old. His 2019 campaign saw him finish as the league’s top scorer with NSW Pride. His success however is not limited to the club game, having won a multitude of competitions with Australia including three Oceania Cups, the 2019 FIH Pro League, and more recently the Gold Medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
