What’s in this Guide?
Francis Ngannou vs Ciryl Gane fight preview
When Cameroon’s Francis Ngannou knocked Derrick Lewis out to win the UFC Heavyweight World Title in August, he became one of the franchise’s older belt holders. At the age of 35, he had managed to reach the top of the division at the second time of asking, following a loss to Stipe Miocic back in 2018.
However, Ngannou might just face the toughest challenge of his career in his first defence of the title against Ciryl Gane. The Frenchman is seen as a favourite of Dana White, who hopes the heavyweight will cause a spike in popularity throughout France, a country that only recently legalised MMA fights.
Interim champion Ciryl Gane is an awesome specimen, who seems to tick all the boxes for a UFC heavyweight. He is big, strong, powerful in attack and dominant on the floor. But what is even more impressive is the way he has mixed it up to get the wins. He has won by submission, TKO and split decisions, meaning that he comes with a lot of experience.
Gane has 10 wins from 10 fights and will be keen to get rid of the Interim Title status and get recognised as the big dog. What’s more, if, Gane wins this fight, he will create history by becoming the first French fighter, male or female, ever to win UFC World Title.
This is a great choice of match up for the first UFC pay per view in 2022, and many are expecting big things from both fighters, Gane in particular. Will he make it 11 from 11, or will Ngannou continue to defy the ageing process? It’s all set up perfectly!

Tale of the tape
What better way to start the new year than with the two best heavyweights in UFC going head-to-head? Well, this is exactly what we have on the cards at UFC 270, and it’s going to be a thrilling start to the 2022 fight calendar year.
Can Ngannou upset the odds?
It’s safe to say that Francis Ngannou is a true UFC warrior that has consistently mixed it with best since joining the promotion back in 2015. But it could be his early days at the MMA Factory in France that may be his undoing. Fernand Lopez, his coach when he started out in the sport, now trains Gane. This means that he could feel slightly exposed, knowing that Gane will have access to a first-hand account of his weaknesses.
Ngannou will have learnt a thing or two since then and corrected the weaker aspects of his style. He has also been in plenty of big fights since then, meaning he knows how to react when the chips are down.
Will Gane become first French UFC champion?
Gane may have huge shoulders, but there is a lot of pressure on them. MMA is one of the fastest-growing sports in France, and a nation’s hopes are on Gane. But he certainly has all the skills to go all the way.
This is, however, his first pay per view event, which in itself brings more scrutiny. His previous wins in the UFC have all come on Fight Night cards, with notable KO victories over Junior Dos Santos and Derrick Lewis.
If Gane comes through this test, he could become one of the most sought names in the business. But it is a big ‘if’, against a fighter like Ngannou.
