What is The Bowraville Murders documentary about?
Between 1990 and 1991 in the town of Bowraville in New South Wales, three Aboriginal children residing from the same street went missing and murdered within a five month period. There was one suspect, a white man who was acquitted of two of the murders in separate trials. The body of one of the victims has never been found.
For decades, these harrowing crimes lingered and inflicted suffering on the victims’ families and their community, calling into question the justice system that failed to provide clear answers and a just resolution. The unsolved murders are blamed on a fractured investigation by the local police, mired with indifference and racism.
While an appeal was filed by an NSW attorney general for a retrial, it was rejected like all the other appeals. In 2020, an increased $1 million reward was announced to gather new information. Last year in October, homicide detectives returned to Bowraville to collect possible new leads. Thirty four years later and the cases of the three Aboriginal children murdered between 1990 and 1991 remain unsolved.
Directed by Allan Clarke,The Bowraville Murders was created in the hopes of continuing the family’s decades-spanning battle for justice and finding new information that could likely become fresh and compelling evidence. It also aims to spread community consciousness as means of getting closer to the truth.
