Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) star in the wild and wicked AI-themed thriller, the Companion movie. 

Movies about AI going rogue is hardly a new ground to tread but warrants a closer introspection nonetheless, especially in the recent years where its ubiquity established. 

Films like Ex Machina, M3GAN, the entire Terminator franchise, and, of course, the Netflix series Black Mirror, are all cautionary tales about the rise of technology and why we should feel anxious about it. 

In 2025, first-time writer/director Drew Hancock is adding another one to the list of unsettling yet clever and hilariously dark AI-themed movies with Companion, produced by Barbarian writer/director Zach Cregger.

What is the plot of the Companion movie?

In 2025’s Companion, Sophie Thatcher of Yellowjackets fame is Iris, a robot designed to be sweet and subservient to its owner, Josh, played by Jack Quaid.

All is well and peachy as per Josh’s control and liking, until a weekend getaway with Josh’s friends at his lakeside estate – ex-girlfriend Kat (Megan Suri), her Russian boyfriend Sergey (Rupert Friend), mean pal Eli (Harvey Guillén), and his boy toy, Patrick (Lukas Gage) – turns prolifically bloody. 

The sci-fi thriller is written and directed by Drew Hancock in his directorial debut from producers Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Raphael Margules, and J. D. Lifshitz.
