Christopher Nolan’s new movie, Oppenheimer, follows J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the scientist behind the development of the atomic bomb.
Based on the book American Prometheus, the film explores the title character’s life: his early studies and his eventual prolific career as a physicist, his tumultuous personal life, and his leadership of the Manhattan Project.
His appointment to lead a project tasked to develop an apocalyptic weapon and its “success” changed the course of history and made him the “Father of the Atomic Bomb”, a name that would later become his undoing.
In addition to Murphy, the movie features a stellar ensemble cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, and Rami Malek.

Oppenheimer movie plot
At the height of World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon) appoints theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to lead the top-secret Manhattan Project. Its goal is to develop an atomic bomb that will bring an end to the ongoing war. Working alongside a team of scientists, including Edward Teller (Benny Safdie) and Isidor Isaac Rabi (David Krumholtz), they spend years working on the ultimate weapons of mass destruction.
On 16 July 1945, the world witnessed the first nuclear explosion with the Trinity test. Not more than a month later on 6 and 9 August 1945, two atomic bombs were detonated over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Oppenheimer is catapulted into the public eye as his work finally comes to fruition, however; the devastating destruction and countless casualties leaves him tormented.
As an advisor to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Oppenheimer becomes resolved to prevent further nuclear research. With his new stance against nuclear development loud and clear, he gains more enemies in the government, most particularly AEC Chairman Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.).
The Father of the Atomic Bomb, in his efforts to limit their use and possibly prevent a nuclear holocaust, is eventually betrayed by his associates. Accused of being a communist and even a spy during the Cold War, he loses his political influence and the support of the anti-communist public, leading to his downfall.
The Oppenheimer film is written and directed by Christopher Nolan, released three years after Tenet. Largely praised for its compelling cast, screenplay, and visuals (Andrew Jackson served as visual effects supervisor), Nolan is also producer alongside Emma Thomas and Charles Roven.
