After the Bite is a documentary that examines the efforts of a beach community in Massachusetts to withstand the impact of a re-adapting marine environment. As its waters become more hospitable to sharks and their prey, local residents and vacationers must now heed nature’s warning, grappling with the unnerving reality that apex predators have come to inhabit the waters of Cape Cod.

What’s in this Guide?

After the Bite documentary preview

A fatal shark attack that claimed the life of a young man on a boogie boarder in 2018 traumatised the idyllic summer community of Cape Cod. The proliferation of great white sharks swarming the waters of the beach community spawns dangerous interactions with humans, and these unfortunate encounters only increase over time. With this alarming new reality, everyone must now consider the high risks of simply being in the sea.

For a coastal community like Cape Cod, this clashes with their way of life.

But as it turns out and how nature intends it to be, the ocean is not people’s playground, and so the increasing number of large sharks have forced one coastal community into a time of reckoning and adaptation.

The drastic changes in the environment are also responsible for these apex predators to flock the waters stretching from Maine to the Cape and Islands: the waters are warmer and there’s a significant increase in the number of the shark’s favourite prey, the North Atlantic gray seal; their population bouncing back due to the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Moreover, the encroachment of apex predators has also forced authorities to be more prepared; that means enhancing training programs and protocols for lifeguards, utilising shark tracking apps, and increasing the availability of stop-the-bleed kits throughout public access beaches. But will all this be enough when nature has already decided it’s time to bite back?

After the Bite, one of HBO documentaries released this year, is directed by Ivy Meeropol.
