This British comedy programme follows the antics of three desperate young men who are in a bit of a pickle trying to keep their jobs, earn money, climb the social ladder, and maybe even meet girls. The only problem is they live in ancient Rome, which makes all those things just mentioned harder to attain.

Starring Tom Rosenthal, Ryan Sampson, Joel Fry (Season 1–3), and Jonathan Pointing (from Season 4), Plebs cleverly use anachronistic modern language and concepts in a historical setting. Fortunately, you now watch Plebs Seasons 1-5 on demand in Australia. Find out how using this guide.

Plebs TV series preview

A comedy that combines modern humour with a historical setting. The show follows the daily lives of three men from the suburbs, Marcus, Stylax and their slave Grumio, as they attempt to climb the social ladder and try to get laid in the big city, which just happens to be ancient Rome.

Working at a grain company alongside Flavia, Aurelius and Claudius, the boys find themselves dealing with all sorts of wacky scenarios, from unscrupulous landlords to aspiring actresses and their slaves.

As the series progresses, we see the introduction and departure of Cynthia and Metella, and the introduction of Delphine from Gaul, who sparks a romantic relationship with Marcus. Season 4 takes an unexpected turn with Stylax involved and is replaced by the character Jason, with the talented Jonathan Pointing joining the cast.

In Plebs Season 5, the boys venture off on a wine-buying trip to Tuscany, but a cart collision leads to some hilarious turn of events, including Jason hooking up with a local milkmaid and Grumio developing a taste for foraged truffles. Another episode sees Marcus stepping up as a tutor to Gloria’s struggling son, Barney, while Jason coaches him in the art of romance.

With its clever use of modern language and pop culture references, Plebs is a show that manages to be both smart and silly at the same time, making it a must-watch for fans of historical comedies.
