From the award-winning director of La La Land and First Man comes a tale of decadence and indulgence, the Babylon movie, following dreamers in 1920s Hollywood during a time when depravity was at its peak. It stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as artists lavishing in the spoils of fame and excess, alongside newcomer Diego Calva, whose character rises through the ranks during Hollywood’s silent film era.

In 1926, Mexican immigrant Manny (Diego Calva) meets Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), an aspiring actress wanting to make it big in motion pictures. Ambitious, confident, and flamboyant, Manny is inspired to be a part of something grand after crossing paths with the up-and-coming star. Nellie ultimately gets the attention she craves, getting hired to do a film and successfully upstaging its lead actress and becoming the new “it girl”.

Meanwhile, Manny works his way in the film industry after meeting silent film star, Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt). As the transition to sound films begin, Manny makes himself more proficient and indispensable, adapting to technical developments that soon gain him directorial opportunities.

While he flourishes in his newfound career, Nellie and Jack struggle to keep up. The former’s inability to adapt to Hollywood’s changing landscape leads to an increased drug use and gambling, while Jack’s acting career just ran its course, his popularity also wanes with the new era of cinema being ushered in.

Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, Babylon presents an extremely graphic look at Hollywood and tells an epic story from the perspective of its flawed, complex characters who thrived from its libertine period. While the Babylon review was mixed, the film still earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Babylon Australian premiere

Babylon hit Australian theaters last 19 January 2023, more than a month after its US premiere courtesy of Paramount Pictures. It finally makes its streaming TV premiere on 8 September on Paramount+, then later on 9 September on Foxtel’s Movies Premiere, then on demand on Foxtel Now and BINGE.
