Foxtel Senior's Card Package Replaced by Lower Cost Offer

Foxtel packages devices

It’s not very often that you get an even better deal on an already discounted package, but that’s what happened with Foxtel Senior’s Card program after the launch of  the ‘Entertainment Pack’, a move that lowered their entry-level subscription price by half!

As a result of this lower-cost package being made available, Foxtel decided to discontinue the Senior’s Card program – but rather than just leave it at that, let’s do a side-by-side comparison to see how you can get even better value by switching to Foxtel Now and its Essentials channel pack.

Price Comparison

Let’s start with cost – after all, the Senior’s Card package was designed to offer senior members quality programming at an affordable rate, and for many it accomplished that.

Base monthly cost of Seniors’ Card package: $39.00
Base monthly cost of the Foxtel Now Essentials channel pack: $25.00

This comparison obviously sees Foxtel Now’s base pack costing some 40% less – but we all know the saying ‘you get what you pay for’, so let’s compare channels, programming and other key features.

Channels on Offer

Channels offered by base Senior’s Card package: 22
Channels offered by base Foxtel Now Essentials channel pack: 31

It looks like the Foxtel Now Essentials pack is the clear winner, but does it offer senior members the kind of programming they prefer?

Channel Comparison

The standard Seniors package included four news channels, two sports channels, six channels of the documentary variety and ten channels that fell under the entertainment category. So a fair question may be, how many of these are included in the 31-channel Foxtel Now Essentials pack?

  • News: You still get four news channels, including Sky News, Sky News UK, CNN and Fox News – as well as Sky News Extra and Weather.
  • Sports: The Essentials pack includes only Fox Sports News – though you can optionally add the full Foxtel Now Sports channel pack for Australia’s best sports coverage.
  • Entertainment: All the key Foxtel entertainment channels are included as part of the Foxtel Now Essentials Pack, a pretty great deal since the new pack includes some entertainment channels that used to cost much more.
  • Documentary: It’s the documentary channels that are missing from the new base bundle, with a comprehensive bundle of eight documentary channels available as an add-on – but only if you subscribe to all the other packs.

That all sounds pretty fair, but is the Foxtel Now Essentials Pack here to stay, or just a short-term promotional offer?

Short Term Sale or Long Term Solution?

As this is now Foxtel Now’s entry-level channel pack, it’s clear that it’s not a sale – it’s a commitment. And if you’re looking to give Foxtel Now a try to see if it works well for you, there’s a completely free 10-day trial available which lets you sample every Foxtel Now channel pack for a full ten days without paying a cent.

Summary

If you’re looking for more sports coverage, Foxtel From Telstra’s current deal which bundles the Foxtel Plus pack with premium sport might be just what you’re looking for. And if you’re after documentary channels like National Geographic and BBC Earth you’ll get those included in that bundle, as well as the entry-level Foxtel Plus bundle. Overall, while the price is a little higher today, Foxtel offers high-quality entertainment to all Australians including Seniors Card members, and when you’re getting more than twice the channels for not much more than the old Seniors’ package, it’s looking like great value. Epic? Time will tell.
