Still mourning the loss of their unborn child, Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt another child. Out of all the children in the local orphanage, the couple is strangely drawn to the young girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman).

When Esther arrives at their home, a series of alarming events begin to unfold. These unexplained events lead Kate to suspect that there is something wrong with Esther’s behaviour. Kate sees past Esther’s sweet facade when the little girl tries to seduce John. She then tries to save her family, but John seems to be unbothered by it. Her warnings about their new daughter seem to go overlooked until it may be too late for everyone.
