Ray Shoesmith is a criminal for hire who operates in the Sydney suburbs. Even when living a life of crime and trouble, he perseveres to fulfill his responsibilities to friends and family, tough roles to attempt in the modern age. He tries his best to be a decent guardian to his terminally ill brother Bruce (Nicholas Cassim), a better father to Brittany (Chika Yasumura), a devoted boyfriend to Ally (Brooke Satchwell), and even a supportive ex husband to Brittany’s mother Jacinta.
However, he constantly finds himself in a quandary – and a massive one at that – he uses violence in his own unique way to deal with criminals… and with others who rub him the wrong way. Later on, the after-effects of his violent professional life begins to take a toll and negatively impacts his relationships.
In Season 3, Ray’s violence lands him in jail, further complicating his relationship with his daughter. He has a bittersweet realisation about the violent world he’s in and how that blatantly contradicts the safe haven he wants to provide for his only child, eventually acknowledging that he can’t protect her forever.
Meanwhile, Bruce’s death in Season 2 leads for Ray and his father, Bill, to share a common grief, ultimately becoming at peace with each other despite their very tumultuous relationship in the past.
