A documentary series that explores the dark and insidious reality of the music industry is streaming in Australia with Menudo: Forever Young. The documentary had its world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Festival earlier this month, which will be followed by its debut in other territories.
The four-part docuseries tells the untold story of the most iconic Latin American boy band in history – their rise to fame and their eventual decline, brought about by the sexual abuse allegations against the band’s manager, Edgardo Díaz.
Filmmakers Ángel Manuel Soto and Kristofer Ríos direct the series, bringing audiences to Menudo’s golden years of global tours, magazine covers, ‘80s outfits, and screaming fangirls. Exposing how fame and glamour are laced with abuse and exploitation, the documentary reveals the truth to the world through interviews with former Menudo members.
In Australia, Menudo: Forever Young streams on demand via select streaming services. Using this guide you can find out where and when you can watch episodes of the new docuseries.
What’s in this Guide?
Menudo: Forever Young documentary preview
Menudo is a Puerto Rican band formed in 1977 by producer Edgardo Diaz. The band first dominated Latin America, and eventually many parts of the world, becoming one of the most popular boy bands in history and selling 20 million records worldwide during the 1980s.
During the 1990s, the group’s popularity started to wane. The allegations of drug use and sexual abuse against Díaz also made things worse that by 1997, the rights and the name Menudo were acquired. HBO Max’s new docuseries, Menudo: Forever Young, aims to shed light on issues and allegations of abuse and how the seemingly glamorous industry hid Diaz’s wrongdoings.
Thus, the docuseries will be revealing interviews of the people who had been there all throughout Menudo’s career – their musical beginnings, their meteoric rise, and how abuse and exploitation at the hands of their manager blighted their personal and professional lives.
Menudo was founded with five original members: brothers Carlos, Oscar, and Ricky Meléndez, and the Sallaberry brothers, Fernando and Nefty. The group changed its lineup since then, but Johnny Lozada, René Farrait, Miguel Cancel, Xavier Serbiá, Charlie Masso and Ray Reyes were Menudo’s members during its golden era. Ricky Martin and Draco Rosa were also members in the 1980s.
