What’s in this Guide?

Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known documentary preview

Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known is taking fans along for the ride as the film features electrifying performances from the reunion concert, newly filmed interviews, and never-before-seen candid archival video and photographs. The performance footage from the original 2006 Broadway show, which won eight Tony Awards, is also included as one of the documentary’s highlights.

As the creative geniuses behind Spring Awakening reflect on the classic and profound charm of the hit musical, fans are able to experience the journey with behind-the-scene footage of the reunited original cast and creative team during rehearsals, backstage, and even in their homes.

The smash-hit musical, which is based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 German play of the same name, launched at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in December 2006. The original main cast included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr.. Tackling teen love, abortion, abuse, sexual identity, and suicide, all of which are taboo issues especially involving teenagers, Spring Awakening went on to sweep the Tonys and forever changed the lives of its cast.

Those You’ve Known also shares the making of the iconic musical, from the challenges and setbacks faced to its ultimate victory at the Tonys. The documentary film even re-explores Spring Awakening’s themes of teen angst and repression, as well as the atypical love story of Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele’s characters, Wendla and Melchior.

Bringing the documentary movie to your screens is HBO Documentary Films presents a RadicalMedia production. It’s directed by Michael John Warren and produced by Dave Sirulnick and Meredith Bennett; while Jon Kamen, Jonathan Meyers, Jonathan Groff, and Michael John Warren serve as executive producers.

How many seasons are there?

The documentary is a film that runs for only one and a half hours. It’s created as a one-off movie for fans of the hit musical so there won’t be any other episodes or seasons.
