Surfing in Australia is, of course, a huge deal. The Australian Boardriders Battle takes place every year and pits the best surf clubs of each state against one another in an epic surfing battle that reaches its finale in January or February of each year.
With pro surfers from the WSL taking part in the annual event, it’s a huge draw for surfing fans and a great opportunity for the next best surfer to get their name out there in the team event.
What is the Australian Boardriders Battle?
Boardriders clubs are the heart and soul of surfing in Australia and often pave the way for young hopefuls to make it to the WSL – the World Surf League, the pinnacle of world surfing.
The Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle is one of the biggest grassroots competitions in the country and the grand final has been hosted at Newcastle Beach for 5 out of the last 6 years the tournament has run.
With WSL surfers joining the participation rosters, the Boardriders Battle draws international attention to the event which sees surfing action take place across the Gold Coast, New South Wales, Victoria, and more before the finals take place once all the rounds have been completed and teams progressed through.
Surfing is such an unpredictable sport it’s often impossible to determine who’s going to come out on top, and combined with the mammoth waves that nature offers, makes for excellent viewing around the globe.
Who won the Australian Boardriders Battle?
The Australian Boardriders Battle has been host to some fantastic surf action in the 9 years it has been running and there have been multiple winners of the event.
North Shelly Boardriders Club won the 2022 Australian Boardriders Battle in the second week of February to claim their very first title after being runners up in both 2019 and 2020, while Snappers Rock Surfriders Club – winners of the first 2 Boardriders Battles in 2014 and 2015 – took their first title in 6 years home in 2021.
The event was a massive success, with the likes of WSL stars Mikey McDonagh and Nyxie Ryan participating in the final – and Macy Callaghan being on the winning team for North Shelly.
How to watch the WSL Championship Tour
Carissa Moore and Gabriel Madina are the reigning champions heading into the 2022 surfing calendar and will be hoping to retain their trophies, while there are a number of challengers to the top spot.
There are 11 tours to look forward to in 2022 and the finals will take place at a currently unknown location in September.
The Australian Boardriders Battle is often a stepping stone for up-and-comers to make it to the WSL, but the WSL stars are also keen to take part in the unique event across Australia.
