Nightmare Alley 2021 movie preview
Nightmare Alley is a modern noir thriller that follows Stanton Carlisle, a carny whose penchant for success and recognition leads him to conjure opportunities with his scheming. Learning psychic techniques after working with a clairvoyant, Zeena, and her mentalist but alcoholic husband Pete, he uses his newfound skills to reinvent himself as a psychic act for the wealthy elite. However, he ignores that one rule he’s supposed to follow when using these skills – do not use it to lead people on into thinking that he can communicate with the dead.
During his time at the carnival, he develops feelings for fellow performer, Molly. They leave after a tragedy and starts over with a two-person act, using Pete and Zeena’s methods, and with Molly as his assistant. Having earned a reputation among wealthy clients with his well-chosen words hooks, Stanton soon finds the hard way that certain rules are created to avoid tragic consequences and there are lines that are not meant to be crossed.
Nightmare Alley is directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay by del Toro and Kim Morgan. Raved for its direction, writing and cinematography, Hollywood Reporter described the film as “a soaring spectacle that casts a spell”. For those who have been waiting for Nightmare Alley to premiere via streaming, the movie is scheduled to screen on select platforms in March 2022.
