What wrestling shows can I watch?
While WWE is the top class wrestling entertainment provider – with its 2 shows WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown offering the biggest, best action with its wrestling stars – there are multiple different wrestling shows available to watch in Australia from around the globe.
WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown
WWE Raw began as WWF’s Monday Night Raw way back in 1993 and has been a staple of the WWE wrestling line up ever since. The action-full show has been host to some memorable wrestling moments with some of the biggest stars the sport has ever seen, including the Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H.
WWE Smackdown joined Raw as WWE’s other flagship show when it began on Friday nights in 1999 and has also been ever-present since. The 2 shows have gone through a series of changes and ups and downs, with both WWE Smackdown and WWE Raw becoming home to their own roster of wrestlers, often creating friction and disputes between the 2 stables – providing dramatic storylines and incredible wrestling action.
WWE NXT
WWE NXT began as a reality-TV programme that pit the next generation of wrestling stars against one another in the hope of winning a contract to compete in the WWE. In 2012, NXT was re-incarnated to become a feeder brand for the WWE when it replaced the Florida Championship Wrestling circuit as the WWE developmental territory.
In April 2021 NXT was given a complete revamp in order to focus on younger, better talent with the hope of harvesting more big names that could wrestle in the WWE. NXT 2.0 was launched in September 2021 with moderate success, and beginning 2022 NXT stars would start appearing in WWE Raw’s Monday Night coverage to provide exposure to the NXT competitors.
AEW wrestling
AEW Wrestling – All Elite Wrestling, also known as Dynamite, is another wrestling show that falls outside the remit of the WWE. Since its inception in 2019 it has gone on to receive critical acclaim for its storylines, characters and match quality – and is a favourite of hardcore wrestling fans. Fans will also note the presence of the world’s best wrestling commentator, Jim Ross (affectionately known as ‘JR’) from many years of experience working with WWE.
ROH Wrestling
Another wrestling show to keep an eye out for is ROH (Ring of Honor), first launched back in 2002. In March of this year, its 20th year on the circuit, ROH was sold to AEW founder and co-owner Tony Khan, who has thus far kept it separate from his AEW network. For the past decade or so, ROH has been considered a major wrestling network in America and expanded their partnerships around the world as a result.
Impact Wrestling
Impact Wrestling is another long-standing wrestling programme that has been in circulation since 2002 and has long been a competitor of WWE. Also known during its time the wrestling network has been known as TNA or Total Nonstop Wrestling, and is currently host to some of the biggest names the sport has ever seen, such as Hulk Hogan, Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle and more.
