Disney Plus Australia - Price, content and streaming offers

Disney Plus Australia

After many years of planning and persistent rumours, Disney’s long-awaited own streaming service launched in 2019, bringing forth Disney Plus Australia into our screens. It marks the beginning of Disney’s efforts to take full control of their film and television brands and properties.

What is Disney Plus Australia?

Disney Plus Australia is the one stop shop for everything Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. But the platform is much more than animations, sci-fi series and kids shows. Star is the newest feature on Disney Plus, a section that gives users access to content for an older audience.

Here you’ll find comedies like Family Guy and The Simpsons alongside new movies like The Creator and The Marvels and a whole lot more originals from Hulu, ABC, and more.

Original content is being made for Disney Plus as well, including new shows based around the Marvel and Star Wars universes. The Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, was available at launch and met with acclaim, while further down the track there are plans for a collection of new shows set in the Marvel and Star Wars universes (10 shows each). Some of Fox’s best-known properties including Home Alone and Night at the Museum are being turned into family TV shows for the service as well.

There’s plenty of original content planned from Disney’s own franchises, too, with several brand new titles including a live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp, the Christmas comedy Noelle starring Anna Kendrick, Kristen Bell’s feel-good musical reality show Encore and a High School Musical – The Series. The acclaimed film of the blockbuster stage musical Hamilton is also a highlight.

How much is Disney Plus Australia subscription?

While it was expected that Disney Plus would be competitively priced, the launch pricing took many by surprise with its affordability. Unlike its competitors, Disney Plus Australia has only one “tier” of service, although that’s no longer the case now with the company separating their service into two: Standard and Premium.

So, how much is Disney+ in Australia? Disney+ Standard retains the $13.99/month pricing, or $139.99 annually, although it no longer offers 4K and Dolby Atmos, as well as four concurrent streams. Instead, subscribers get streaming in full HD, up to 5.1 audio, and two simultaneous streams.

If you’re an existing subscriber and you want to keep streaming content in 4K, you’ll need to get the higher-tier plan – Premium – which costs $17.99 per month, or $179.99 annually.

With a Disney+ subscription, you get 1000+ hours of new content aimed at an adult audience via the new Star section, as well as a vastly expanded schedule of Disney Plus originals for all ages that will hugely increase the quality and range of movies and shows available on the service. There is no Disney Plus free trial

Disney Plus Premier Access is an extra fee on top of the monthly subscription for unlimited access to that film; it costs $34.99, cheaper than a night out at the movies. Premier Access movies are available to all subscribers eventually – usually after around three months.

What’s on Disney Plus Australia?

Disney Plus is the streaming service with some of the best movies and TV on the planet. There is something on Disney for everyone whether it’s from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, National Geographic, Fox or anywhere else.

Here you can check out what to stream on Disney Plus this month.

Best shows on Disney Plus

Disney Plus has been absolutely pumping out TV shows and original series including the likes of Marvel & Star Wars originals WandaVision, The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Loki. Disney Plus delivers more streaming content weekly than most streaming services offer in a month.

While not as much as Marvel & Star Wars content, Disney is still producing their own series such as the docuseries The Beatles: Get Back. For factual content, look no further than National Geographic content, which is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and National Geographic Society. The streaming service has too much great Disney content for us to showcase, so here are some of the best Disney Plus shows:

Star Wars franchise on Disney Plus

The deal between Disney and Lucasfilm will go down in history, but what that means is almost everyone knows that Disney is now the home of Star Wars, with the latest live-action films all being made under the Disney umbrella.

Not only can you watch the Disney original The Mandalorian, but you can stream your favourite Star Wars movies, episodes, and animated features anywhere and anytime.

Marvel movies on Disney Plus

Another massive property that Disney own and produce is Marvel. Everything from Marvel Studios is now exclusive to Disney including the live action MCU movies, the previous animated Marvel films and series, as well as the new original series being produced like Loki and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Thanks to their partnership with Fox, you can also enjoy the Fox Marvel features alongside the MCU greats.

Best Pixar movies on Disney Plus

Disney Pixar studios are the key to kids’ imaginations with each movie seemingly more heartfelt and memorable than the rest. While some of these titles may be lingering on Netflix and other streaming services, prepare for them to wave goodbye. Disney Plus is the home of the best Pixar animation including Luca, Toy Story, and Wall-E.

More shows on Disney Star

With the addition of Disney Star, there was a massive improvement on the Disney streaming service. No longer was it purely kids content, but now there were titles for more mature ages as well. Disney now offer all episodes of the long-running animated series The Simpsons, The X-Files, Firefly, Prison Break and many more.

Best Kids TV on Disney Plus

Kids are what Disney gets right. As well as the Disney Pixar films like Luca, they also produce original series for kids. There is the relaxing break offered with Dug Days, episode upon episode of glee with Monsters at Work, or even the TV adaptation of High School: Musical.

Disney Premier Access

Starting with the release of the live-action remake of Mulan in September 2020, Disney Plus Australia introduced a new feature – Premier Access. Offering films at the same time as their cinema release (or even exclusive to Disney Plus) Premier Access lets subscribers pay a one-time fee to stream the movie before anyone else.

Disney Premier Access

How does Disney Plus compare to BINGE?

The main benefit of Disney Plus compared to BINGE is the access to franchises like Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar available on Disney. If you’re looking for something a little darker in your storylines or reality TV, then BINGE is a more solid option – though the addition of Star to Disney Plus means it’s got lots to watch for older viewers as well.

Overall, Disney Plus Australia is great for the family, especially if you’re looking for something that can please all ages. Disney Plus also comes with the option of an annual price plan. Worth a month’s trial – start streaming Pixar Marvel Star Wars and much more today!

What devices does Disney Plus support?

Aside from web browsers on PC and Mac computers, dedicated devices supporting Disney Plus include iOS and Android phones and tablets. To watch Disney Plus on your smart TV, there’s Apple TV (HD and 4K models), Chromecast, Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Smart TVs, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

In the US, Roku devices are also supported, which makes it highly likely that we’ll eventually see support for the popular Telstra TV boxes in Australia, which, after over a year since Disney Plus’ launch, became available as announced by Telstra recently.

Portable devices are able to download shows and movies to view offline, with up to ten devices allowed to hold downloads at one time.

What people are asking about Disney+

How do I subscribe to Disney+?

Simply visit the Disney+ website, select ‘sign up now’ and enter your email address and password. Once done, select your subscription type, enter your payment information, and you’re done! You can start streaming every TV series and movie on Disney+.

Is Disney+ better than Netflix?

It depends on your preferred content. Disney+ has lots of exclusive shows and movies from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Nat Geo, Disney and Star. Disney+ is absolutely better if you’re a huge fan of the aforementioned content. Netflix, on the other hand, also offers great programming with both original and third-party content. Shows like Stranger Things, The Crown, Bridgerton, and many others, continue to be popular on the streaming service.

Is Disney+ different in Australia?

All countries will have Disney Plus originals, however, other movies and TV series may vary depending on the region. When it comes to movies, Disney+ Australia has the best catalogue, but for TV shows, Disney+ in the US has the most content.

How much is the yearly fee for Disney+?

Disney+ costs $139.99 each year for the Standard Plan, which works out to be only $11.66/month. Annual plan for the Premium plan costs $179.99. Overall, getting a yearly Disney+ subscription gives you about 16% savings.

Is Disney+ free with Amazon Prime?

Currently, there’s no deal between Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

Did the Disney+ price go up?

Yes. As of 5 March 2024, the 4K streaming, Dolby Atmos, and four concurrent streams included in the $13.99/month plan are now exclusive to Disney Plus’ new Premium Plan, which costs $17.99/month. The 13.99/month plan still exists as the Standard Plan, which includes full HD viewing and two concurrent streams.

Why did the price go up for Disney+?

The price increase last 2021 coincided with the launch of the new Star channel, which brought in so much more content from other Disney subsidiaries, including FX Networks, Freeform, Hulu, ABC Signature, 20th Television, 20th Television Animation, 20th Century Studios, 20th Century Animation, Searchlight Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures.

The latest price increase in 2024, however, sees the on-demand service creating a more expensive streaming tier to offer 4K/Dolby Atmos content. While these features were offered at no extra cost before as part of the originally single-tier $13.99 plan, these streaming goodies are now part of the more expensive Premium Plan.

How to cancel Disney+?

If you’re done with Disney Plus for now, it’s easy to cancel your subscription – just head to Disney Plus in your web browser, click your profile picture in the top right corner, choose “Account” and then click your subscription, and click “Cancel Subscription”. If you subscribed via an Apple or Android app, you’ll need to cancel your subscription through the iTunes Store or Google Play Store.

Is Harry Potter on Disney+?

No – the Harry Potter movies are owned by Warner Brothers and can be found on other streaming services like Foxtel Now or BINGE or rented on outlets like the iTunes Store, Google Play Movies and Telstra TV Box Office.

How to get Disney+ on Hisense Smart TV

If you have a Hisense smart TV that uses the brand’s Vidaa operating system, then unfortunately you’re out of luck – Disney Plus doesn’t have an app for that platform, and likely never will. For those TVs, use of an external streaming device like Telstra TV, Apple TV or Google Chromecast will give you access. Some newer Hisense models are based on Android TV – and that means the Disney+ app is waiting for you in the app store.

Is it known how many screens Disney+ allows?

Every subscriber can stream on up to four devices at the same time when getting the Premium Plan – great for families! The Standard Plan, meanwhile, allows up to two simultaneous streaming.

How many devices can I have Disney+ on?

You can install the Disney+ app on all of your supported devices and use any of them to stream your favourite movies and shows at any time. You can stream simultaneously on up to four devices at once when choosing the Premium Plan, two concurrent streams if Standard.

Can you download Disney+ shows and movies?

Yes – on iPhone, iPad and Android devices (but not Android TV devices) you can download the shows and movies you want to watch directly to your device to watch on the go without using your valuable internet quota. Downloads are allowed on up to 10 devices.

Downloads aren’t available on smart TVs, game consoles or streaming devices.

How to watch Disney+ on TV?

To enjoy Disney Plus on TV, you’ll need a supported smart TV – or, if your TV doesn’t have a Disney Plus app, a supported streaming device. Disney Plus is available on all the major ones – Apple TV, Telstra TV and Google’s latest Chromecast with Google TV. Apps are also available for PlayStation and Xbox game consoles.

How to get Disney+ on Apple TV?

To start streaming with Disney+ on Apple TV, simply head into the App Store app on the device, head to “Apps” in the top menu bar, and you’ll see Disney Plus in the regularly updated “top free apps” section. Download it, then run the app and sign in using the Disney+ app on your smartphone.

Is Disney+ worth it?

Starting at $13.99 per month, Disney Plus remains incredibly good value. with the addition of the massive amount of content that came with Star. Its library of first-rate entertainment – now for people of all ages. Even the new $17.99 per month is priced well below what other major streaming services charge for their 4K-enabled plans. And with 4 devices able to be used at the same time on one account, it’s an easy win for something the whole family can use.

What is Disney+ Star?

Added after the launch of Disney+ – but only in selected countries outside the US, including Australia – Star is essentially a place for Disney+ to put their more mature content – movies like the Die Hard and Alien series, TV shows from their US streaming service Hulu such as High Fidelity, and content from the US TV network ABC, which Disney owns. It’s added huge value to the overall Disney Plus experience.

Can you cast Disney+?

Yes, indeed you can! The Disney+ apps on iPhone, iPad and Android all have full support for Chromecast, so you can cast video effortlessly from your device to any Android TV and any other display with a Chromecast attached. You can also cast from the Disney+ website itself, if you’re using the Google Chrome web browser.

Can you get Disney+ on Fetch TV?

Yes – Simply access Disney+ from the Fetch menu. Once you find the app, select and follow the instructions to sign up or sign in.

Is Disney+ down?

Probably not! Since launch, Disney+ has been one of the most reliable streaming services we’ve seen so far. But if you’re having trouble accessing it, check the Down Detector web site to see if anyone else is reporting problems, or get in touch with the Disney Plus support team.
