2019 Indy 500 Live TV Preview
With the pre-race qualifying done and dusted, the sprint to capture the ‘Borg-Warner’ trophy will involve thirty-three drivers, including up to ten who are former Indy 500 champs. Helio Castroneves is a three-time winner of the Indy 500 and is looking to grab his fourth in 2019, a record which would see him sit alongside three other drivers with the most salutes in the iconic race. His recent form hasn’t been too great, but he’s a proven big time performer at the Indy 500 and will go in as a leading contender.
One of the leading chances will be the defending champion and Australian driver Will Power. For many years he had been striving to win the Indy 500 and that dream came true in 2018. Since that historic victory, his confidence has led to some really good form in the Series. He is currently 6th in the driver standings, and his car, for the most part, has been quick this season. That’s also been evident in early practice for the race, where he has been comfortably and most consistently the fastest.

Indy 500 Track Facts
The Speedway is nicknamed “The Brickyard,” because the track was once paved with bricks.
The Indianapolis Speedway was the first track in the world to require helmets be worn by drivers (1935).
One lap around the track is 2.5 miles (4.02 km), and there’s 200 laps in the Indy 500 equaling 804.67 km.
For more than fifty years, the winning driver has pulled into Victory Lane and taken a drink of milk.
The event is one of the most prestigious races world-wide, and along Monaco Grand Prix (May 26) as well as the 24 Hours Le Mans (June 15-16) it forms the Triple Crown of Motorsport.
Contrary to popular perception, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is not located in Indianapolis. It’s in Speedway, Indiana, a community incorporated in 1926.
Indy 500 Drivers to Stream
The most consistent driver so far in 2019 has clearly been Josef Newgarden, who leads the drivers championship after the first five rounds, with four top four finishes, including the opening race of the year at St Petersburg. His car has been quick all year and that’s a big reason why he’s leading the championship. He drove well in the 2018 Indy 500, finishing eighth, and did lead for a few laps. If he brings his regular season form into the the 2019 Indy 500, he’s one of the key drivers to beat.
Kiwi driver Scott Dixon is a seasoned pro in the IndyCar series and will no doubt be thereabouts once again in the 2019 edition of this race. He won the race in 2008, which pretty much set him in stone as one of the better drivers on the tour. He placed in the race last year, but it was 2017 where it was pretty much the one that got away. He was leading after starting from pole and was doing it comfortably, until there was a crash in front of him and he couldn’t get out of the way in time, resulting in his car doing a couple of airbourne flips. Remarkably, he came out of it unscathed and finished the race, albeit with a severely damaged vehicle. He has finished top three in four of the five events so far in 2019, making him a leading chance.
The interesting driver to watch is Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula One champion who is driving in the Indy 500, seen as one of the great challenges of Motor Sport. He is looking to become the second man in history to win Motor Sports ‘Triple Crown’, which includes the Indy 500 alongside the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours, both of which he has won. He was going to go close to winning the 2017 Indy 500, when engine failure finished his day. In recent practice, he made a mistake and crashed, but came out of it fine and the car should be good to go. He is one of the best drivers in the world and if the luck goes his way, he can definitely win.
