The greatest prize in Aussie football is up for grabs this Sunday when Perth Glory plays host to the Sydney FC. They were the top two sides at the end of the regular season and are each deserving of their spot on the final day of the season.
The match will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth, a ground which has predominantly been used for Australian Rules football and cricket since opening in January of 2018. 2019 A-League Grand Final Preview
Perth and Sydney head into the 2019 Grand Final having endured vastly different histories since the league began 14 years ago. For the Glory, it’s a chance to live up to their name for the first time, having never tasted the ultimate success in the A-League. This will be just their second appearance at the big dance, the only other occasion occurring back in 2012 when they lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Brisbane Roar, who scored two goals in the last ten minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. In contrast, Sydney FC has been one of the most successful clubs in the league, with their three titles the equal most of any club. A win here and they can officially declare themselves the most successful club in A-League history.
Perth were the dominant side all season and have the home ground advantage, but there is plenty of reason for Sydney FC to feel confident as well. The visitors won through to the Grand Final on the back of a dominant 6-1 win over the side that ousted them in last year’s semi-final, the Melbourne Victory, while Perth only just scraped past Adelaide United courtesy of a penalty shoot-out. Sydney FC also has a significant advantage in terms of finals experience having won two years ago and reached a semi-final last year, and won two of three games between the two sides this year. But with Perth the best side throughout the year and in front of what will no doubt be a raucous home crowd, it shapes up as a Grand Final to remember, and it wouldn’t surprise to see this one extend past 90 minutes.
