On 2 November 2023, “Now and Then”, considered the “last Beatles song”, was officially released. It was written and recorded by John Lennon in 1978, although it remained unfinished. Attempts to work on the song began in 1995 as part of The Beatles Anthology project. Unfortunately, it didn’t materialise partly because no technology was available back then to work with the vocal that John recorded in the ‘70s.

But a song written and recorded by a music icon deserves an audience. The production of Peter Jackson’s documentary series The Beatles: Get Back ultimately becomes the key to piecing the puzzle together, all thanks to a software system developed by Jackson and his team.

Exploring the musical journey spanning over five decades between the four Beatles is the short film Now and Then – The Last Beatles Song.

What is Now and Then – The Last Beatles Song about?

The Now and Then short film covers the decades-spanning work of The Beatles to produce their final song, with John Lennon first writing and recording “Now and Then” in 1978.

He never got to finish the ballad until his death in 1980. The remaining Beatles originally planned to feature the song in The Beatles Anthology alongside John’s two other demos “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love”.

A technological breakthrough, however, took place in 2022 as a result of the production of Peter Jackson’s docuseries The Beatles: Get Back, which features never-before-seen footage and audio materials.

Using an audio software, John’s vocals were separated from the demo, cleaning up the sound. This then allowed Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to finish the song last year. “Now and Then” also features the sounds of late guitarist George Harrison, which he recorded in 1995.

Telling the story of a grand musical journey that took place over five decades is the Now and Then short film. It includes exclusive footage of The Beatles and commentary from those involved in bringing the recording back to life.
