In the first ever live-action Barbie movie, Barbie and Ken live in a paradise called Barbieland where they spend all of their days doing blowout parties, performing planned choreography, and looking all fresh and pretty 24/7. But when Barbie begins to worry about her own mortality, she finds herself dejected and looking for answers. The only way to get through her mysterious affliction is to travel into the real world.

Together with Ken, they embark on an adventure in the real world where they find themselves rollerblading in matching neon and screaming pink ’90s outfits. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was one of the most anticipated films of 2023.

What is the plot of the Barbie movie?

In Barbieland, all women are Barbies and all men are Kens. Today is the best day ever, unless it’s already the next day, then that one becomes the best.

Because in a fantastical land of vibrant colours, melodies, and jaw-dropping outfits, every minute is bliss. Then one day, the most popular of all the Barbies in Barbieland, Stereotypical Barbie (Robbie), suffers what we call in the real world an existential crisis.

Meeting with a local outcast called Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon), she learns that the only way to overcome her dilemma is to understand herself and find her purpose, which she will never find in her own Barbie world. To do this, she must travel to the human world and find her owner. And yes, she also finds out that she, along with all the residents of Barbieland, are toys, a Barbie doll to be exact.

On her way to the real world, Ken (Ryan Gosling), who’s harbouring an unrequited crush on her, shows up and tags along. Arriving in the human world together, they discover unpleasant truths and make new friends along the way. She also finds her owner and discovers the source of her existential crisis.

Barbie’s road to enlightenment, however, is interrupted by the CEO of Mattel (Will Ferrell), intent on capturing the awakened doll. Ken, meanwhile, makes his way back to Barbieland and finds himself wanting to make shocking changes after seeing men riding horses in the real world.

It turns out that groveling for Barbie’s attention has him feeling lonely and sort of bitter, plus he doesn’t want to “beach” anymore. Experiencing the problematic masculinity of the real world, Ken takes that as a promising sign that he and the other Kens must take over Barbieland.

Development for a live action film began in 2014 with Sony Pictures at the helm. This fell through with Warner Bros. Pictures ultimately acquiring the rights to the character. After several writer, director, and lead cast changes, with Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway originally playing Barbie, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were officially confirmed as the film’s writer-director and lead star, respectively.
